To Ndamukong Suh: Good for Me and Bad for You

Although the main trajectory of what we will write and post about here on our blog is mostly matters of faith and the like, we are big time sports fans also.  And even bigger Husker fans.  I want to talk for a little bit about the beast man in the picture above.  That is Ndamukong Suh (don’t worry, I can’t pronounce his name either), the now senior defensive tackle for the Huskers. I would like to present my case of 3 reasons why he shouldn’t be a Husker right now.  He should be in the NFL.  Andy is welcome to present is view on this matter, but he is wrong. Listen to me. Anyways, here goes:

1) He would have been a guaranteed 1st round pick. – No one can really argue this point.  There were only 2 defensive tackles taken in the first round, and there is little doubt that Suh is better then at least one of them (Jerry Peria from Ole Miss is not near the player that Suh is).  This was a thin year for defensive tackles in the draft and it is a high priority need in the NFL.  As the saying goes “Great DTs don’t grow on trees” (that really isn’t a saying I just made it up).  Look at all the projections for next year’s draft.  He is a top 10 pick in all of them and a Top 5 or 3 pick in many of them (Todd McShay has him as high as #2).  But his stock for next year is that high now.  Can his stock go any higher? No.  He now has played himself to the point he has no where to go but down.  Ask Matt Leinart how well that worked out for him…

2) Its all about the benjamins, baby. – Now, from a personal standpoint, I don’t think that money should be the thrust of how and why we live (I am sure there will be many posts in the future on this very matter but that is a topic for another day).  But, there is no doubt that Suh has cost himself millions of dollars in potential income in the immediate by coming back to school.  You can’t even really say that Suh is on scholarship anymore can you? The reality is that this man is paying millions of dollars in lost income to go class and sit next to that annoying girl that won’t stop chomping her gum and her cell phone keeps going off from the 348 text messages she gets every hour.  Now, Andy might refute that and say that he could actually gain more money in the long run if his draft stock goes even higher.  But is that guaranteed?  It is going to be awfully hard for him to have more momentum then 2 games like the Colorado and Clemson game last year.  Good “luck” repeating performances like that…

3) You can pull a Shaq and go back and get your degree later. – He said several times that one of the reasons he is coming back was because he promised his parents he would get his degree.  Degree?  That is what the off season is for.  You have a gift son and it is a gift that a degree can’t hold.  The only degree that you need is one in bringing the pain (Clubber Lang style).  And in that, you actually already have your doctorate.  I am actually going to refer to you as Dr. Suh for the rest of this post, out of respect for your doctorate in pain.

So there you have it.  Dr. Suh I want to thank you and let you know that, as a Husker fan, I am grateful for the misfortune of your decision…
